This is one of my favorite Halloween crafts for children. It's fast and simple, may be done with a crowd if necessary, and is an excellent way to go through cutting and fine motor skills with younger kids. Older kids will be able to let their creativity take over and create some really off the wall Halloween spiders!
What you'll need:
Black construction paper
Scissors
Glue or sticky-tape
Googly eyes (optional) or pieces of paper and pens
Instructions:
Cut a rectangle of paper approximately 3 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Fold the shorter side over about an inch to fashion a crease, and open it up again.
Turn the paper so that the crease is horizontal, and then cut the paper in 7 even lines up to the crease to make eight spider's legs. When working with younger children, draw in the outline for them to repeat cutting on. For bigger children, show them how to make the first cut in the midpoint, dividing the space below the fold into 2 halves. Then show them how to divide each half yet again to produce quarters, and then the quarters to make eighths. There's no need to be overly accurate.
Now wrap the spider around the child's finger then secure using sticky-tape or glue. Remove the spider once more and decorate - either with bits of paper or with googly eyes. Put the spider once again on the finger and twist the legs into shape or wind them around a pencil.
Variations:
Dangle the spiders! Simply cut a length of black yarn (wool) and attach on the head of the spider using a small piece of sticky-tape.
Build smaller versions of these spiders to decorate the ends of Halloween pencils.
Wrap tiny spiders on straws to adorn your Halloween table! Make a few bigger spiders and scatter them around the table as well.
Cut a tiny cut on both sides of the spider's head and insert a name card transforming these spiders into spooky place markers!
When the body of the spider has been made but prior to decorating, place a black pipe cleaner around the head of the spider creating a furry effect. The extending end of the pipe cleaner can be curled right into a hook design, that will make the spider easy to dangle from shelves, the tops of doors, and other spooky places! Glue cartoon eyes on the top of the pipe cleaner.
