Well after I first started hunting for a repair for my Xbox 360 RROD, I became stressed by lots of the information available to choose from. You'll find a gazillion sites, each hawking their instructions (generally $24.95. You can get some for free) and there are the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have uncovered the miraculous remedy. The three that I will review are what appear to be the most used (and many times most bizarre).
Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something similar to this: You take the hard drive off, encapsulate the entire device in a towel to avoid the excess heat from escaping, turn the console on for about 15 minutes to cook (some instructions advise an hour), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and like magic it functions. But why? I have not heard a reliable reason yet. Here is one of the explanations..."the system gets so hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the bring about the red lights to start with"..... Listed here are some likely risks as brought up in the same directions "could possibly damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The unit could catch on fire it gets so hot". I need to say I will rate this as the 2nd most absurd Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death repair from the three in consideration. Advice: Avoid the use of this fix.
Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I do not even want to explain how to do this. In essence, a rubbermaid tub is full of ice water, some vinegar is added, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and immersed in water/vinegar concoction. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and instantly plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually heard about a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as numerous other fixes was presented as a youtube video. It is really quite reckless and really should be removed. This repair is easily the most ludicrous fix of the three in consideration. Suggestion: Don't even think about applying this repair should you value your health.
Number #3 - X-Clamp Repair - This is actually the only reputable fix I've found thus far. It is as fixed as it gets. Don't use it however if your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. Then again, in case the seal is broken and/or it's not under warranty this fix is the best choice. This is the repair in summary; you open up the console, take out the x-clamps, clean the existing thermal paste, place brand new thermal paste on, change the x-clamps with screws and washers, reassemble the machine, overheat, allow it cool down and it works on something like 90% of the units. Advice: Take advantage of this Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error fix.
